  3. Bob Recine: Alchemy of Beauty

The Celebrated Hairstylist Reflects on the Aspirations Guiding His Artistry

Visionary hairstylist and artist Bob Recine sits down with filmmaker Alison Chernick in his New York studio to reflect on his friendship with Andy Warhol, the eternal quest for beauty, and collaborating with Lady Gaga on a room made entirely out of hair for one of Barneys window displays last Christmas. Growing up as part of New York’s rebellious 1970s punk scene, Recine took an early interest in urban art and music, building a vast portfolio and playing in multiple bands before translating his creative pursuits into hairdressing. Known today for his exquisite styling and sculptural coiffures, Recine has made bold statements on runways and in campaigns for the likes of Chloé, Kenzo and Jil Sander. “He is on a quest to find that transient moment of beauty,” says Chernick, likening Recine to the groundbreaking El Bulli chef Ferran Adrià. “His work transforms the medium from which it was born.” From Annie Leibovitz and Mario Testino to Irving Penn and Helmut Newton, Recine has collaborated with every major photographer, and his ‘dos have graced covers of most leading fashion publications, including Wi-DVHarper’s Bazaar, and every global edition of Vogue. This month, the highlights of the industry legend’s lengthy career in hairstyling, art and sculpture—including a human figure made from 60lbs of hairpins—are gathered in Freedman/Damiani’s new book, Bob Recine: Alchemy of Beauty. JILLIAN MAYER

We love these whimsical “visual performances” by Miami, FL based artist Jillian Mayer.  To create these comical images, Jillian uses a wide variety of mediums, including sculpture, performance, video and photography. Her work has been garnering a lot of attention lately, including a recent cover story in Art Papers.

  5. Japanese artist Riusuke Fukahori paints three-dimensional goldfish using a complex process of poured resin. The fish are painted meticulously, layer by layer, the sandwiched slices revealing slightly more about each creature, similar to the function of a 3D printer. (via thisiscolassal.com)

  6. Thanks to everyone who came out to support the show, especially my cousin who drove from Somerset, Va just to surprise me! Also, the girls at Quirk did a tremendous job promoting and setting up this beautiful show. If you didn’t get a chance to see the new work no worries the show will be up for the remainder of  February & I will be posting the new work later today on my website, www.emeraldgrippa.com.

  10. Thanks to tumblr I ran into Nicolas Santos’ collages. What I am showing above is just a small selection from his immense body of work.

  11. Bianca Chang is a young designer and paper artist based in Sydney, Australia. Inspired by the subtlety of tone on tone signage and the shadow-play of three-dimensional letterforms, she started working on a series of hand-cut graphic paper sculptures which she has since exhibited and continues to develop through gallery showings and private commissions.

The majority of her  works are created by hand-plotting and cutting multiple sheets of 80gsm 100% recycled paper – minimising the impact of paper consumption and consciously transforming a typically disposable medium into a long term piece of art.

I wish I could see these in person. I am such a sucker for meticulous details that take hours even days to complete but look absolutely effortless. I am on the hunt for great paper cutting techniques and inspiration, that is how I found the artist above. If you know of anyone or anything I should check out please send those links my way!!
